Bar Top - Faux Marble Using Epoxy

Bar Top - Faux Marble Using Epoxy

(and surprise...Contact Paper!)

Back in the 1980s, my dad helped build a large bar in his family room. It was made out of solid oak, had huge cabinets with lots of storage and a tiled top that was contemporary for it's time. Years later my dad decided to remodel that part of his house and was going to get rid of the bar. So my husband and I rented a U-Haul and carefully dismantled it and brought it back to our house, where it served it's purpose for another 20 years. But that tiled countertop look had worn out it's welcome and I wanted to update the whole look of the bar. At first I was going to do a colored epoxy effect which would make a granite-like look. I did lots of reading about this technique and was about ready to pull the trigger when I came across another method that used contact paper that looked like stone with a clear epoxy. What?? I was intrigued, and looked heavily into this new kind of counter transformation. Eventually I decided that was the better way to get the white marble effect I was going for. And of course I'm always up for a new way to change the look of something. I'm really happy with the final result. It really does look like white marble!

Bar - BEFORE:

(I had already painted the wood cabinets dark gray - forgot to take a picture of this - and I had begun to fill in the gaps between the ceramic tiles with grout. I didn't worry about the grout color because it was all going to get covered up anyway)
