Virginia Tech Hokie Bird Chairs

My New Endeavor: Creating Virginia Tech HokieBird Chairs

If you read my post about reupholstering furniture then you already know that I love to bring new life to old chairs. It's a tedious, often physical and sometimes tricky process but the transformations can be amazing. And the possibilities are endless. I was in Asheville with some friends and we were exploring one of the many art warehouses there. Talk about creative people! I saw a chair that had been reupholstered to look like a flamingo. It was fluffy and colorful and full of whimsy. I had never seen anything like it, and it definitely left an impression on me.  Weeks later, back at home, I randomly came across a pair of chair frames for sale. I had no need for these chair frames, but for some reason the shape of them appealed to me and I thought maybe I could make them into something interesting and fun. I didn't know what at the time, just that I needed to buy those chair frames. The next week I was driving through the Virginia Tech campus on my way home from work. Virginia Tech has been a huge part of my life as my husband worked there for over 22 years and my oldest son went to college there. My father in law graduated from VT also. We are huge Hokie fans here! All of the sudden I knew what I wanted to do with those old chair frames. Transform them into HokieBird chairs! As is my process, I bought another old chair to experiment on before I tackled the chair frames. The creative process took me over 3 months to plan, test, do and then redo with the experimental chair, but in the end it was well worth it! I love the look and feel of this chair, and think there are lots of VT Hokie fans out there that might agree, and even want one too. So I've created a new business transforming old chairs into HokieBird chairs. Pictures and prices of the chairs I've completed so far are listed on another page of this blog. If you're interested in buying one just email me and I can help you with any questions and get the process started. Here are the chair frames that I had to have. Literally just frames! You really have to muster up a lot of imagination to picture that they could turn into anything appealing. But it's going to happen! I can see it. But first I had to test out my creative idea on some other chairs. Stay tuned for the big reveal of these massive throne chairs. It won't be long now...
